Essential CNC Machining Materials and Their Applications

Nov 29, 2024

Common Metal Materials
Aluminum alloy: This composite material is lightweight and high strength as well as hard to corrode which makes it easy to be CNC machined. It is specifically used in components for spaceships, auto mobile parts and casings of electronic appliances where the requirement of less weight has more consideration.

Stainless steel: These metals are important in CNC machining due to them being strong, resistant to rust and having some good mechanical features which makes them significant in medical devices and machinery used for food processing and chemicals.Parts made out of stainless steel are good for many situations and environments, various types of stainless steel are available for different environments.

Brass: Brass is a common metal that does not crack easily, has a good range of thermal and electric conductivity, and is most commonly used in components of electrical appliances, valves for automobiles, and gears. Considering its properties, this metal is more suited for CNC machining as it can easily be processed.

Titanium alloy: This metal has a very effective corrosion resistance and an equally effective weight to strength ratio . Its best uses can be called as aerospace devices, medical equipment, as well as consumer equipment for high end combat sports. On the contrary, titanium alloys have a couple of bad insights in that they are high require when it comes to getting processed and require advanced tools and machining in the form of CNC.

Common plastic materials
Polyoxymethylene (POM): Polyoxymethylene, also known as Saigang, its an industrial grade plastic that is low friction and high strength. Its applications can be found in gears, bearings and sliders who’s sole purpose is to serve in surfaces that are load bearing and restrict wear and tear in an efficient manner.

Polycarbonate (PC)
Polycarbonate is one of the most frequent components contained in various protective covers, optical parts, and electronic devices as it is strong and transparent. This material works well in intricate CNC machining as well, however, specific cutting parameters must be set to prevent the material from thermally deforming.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): Popularly known as Teflon, PTFE exhibits favorable features of low friction and chemical corrosion, which makes it ideal for use in chemical equipment and sealing parts.
